Forest and sea borders for Peace - Frontepaz

Contributing to the well-being, social progress, and peaceful coexistence of the population in the Pacific Coast region of northern Chocó.

Implementation period
From 07/Apr/2017 To 06/Jan/2021

General Description

The project contributes to the well-being, social progress, and peaceful coexistence of the population in the Pacific Coast region of northern Chocó in the framework of the Peace Accords. The project promotes good living and peace through participatory regional planning, reduced inequality, and sustainable economic development in the region.

The project is structured to address four regional components that have been aggravated by the conflict: 1) local economic development; 2) environment and regional management; 3) social and cultural development; and 4) local governance.

At the same time, the project is concerned with improving food security and sovereignty conditions, strengthening political-administrative and ethnic-regional entities governance, and implementing actions that promote tourism and the local economy.  It seeks to accomplish these objectives through social and economic infrastructure, promoting and strengthening traditional mechanisms for health provision, as well as self-education and dignified housing.

Contribution to the Peace Accourds

The project contributes to point 1 of the Peace Agreement by formulating an environmental and economic management plan for the region with mechanisms to overcome conflicts of land and ocean use, and by improving productivity and sustainability of the production chains. The project also formulates a regional solid waste management plan and a tourism plan with a community focus on identity and nature. The project promotes the restructuring of cattle management and farming, and sustainable management of the fishery resource.

Objectives and Results

The project has four specific results.

●     The first result strengthens economic chains such as tourism, fishing, and green businesses of Afro-Pacific, indigenous, and mestizo communities, by developing sustainable economic initiatives and establishing commercial agreements.

●     The second result overcomes conflicts of land use, environment, management and disposal of solid waste in the north coast region of Chocó.

●     The third result improves indigenous and Afro-Pacific communities’, particularly youth and conflict victims, access to social services through greater intercultural recognition and by closing  social gaps. Schools, homes, and healthcare institutions are improved as well.

●     The fourth result improves the technical capacities of public and community regional political entities in the North Chocó so that they can better manage, and advocate for, social development and peaceful coexistence.
